{"id":180294,"date":"2023-02-09T16:05:50","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T00:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eugeneweekly.com\/?p=189078"},"modified":"2023-02-09T16:05:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T00:05:50","slug":"life-lessons-from-shakespeare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/extra.eugeneweekly.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/09\/life-lessons-from-shakespeare\/","title":{"rendered":"Life Lessons from Shakespeare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Springfield playwright Dorothy Velasco\u2019s latest play, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ladies Shakespeare Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, premieres Friday, Feb. 17, for a two-weekend run at Very Little Theatre\u2019s intimate Stage Left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new comedy traces a group of women whose study of Shakespeare over more than four decades informs their relationship to everything from women\u2019s rights to the pain and suffering that afflicts humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ladies Shakespeare Club <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a timeless story about the bonds of sisterhood and friendship,\u201d director Karen Scheeland says in a news release, adding that the play is \u201ca touching story featuring a diverse cast of women that will entertain, and occasionally move you to tears.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cast includes Denise LaCroix, Zepha Wright, Jen Ferro, Christiana Dancer, Toni Mucker, Sarah de Leon and Aimee Okotie-Oyekan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Velasco, who occasionally writes about local theater for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a longtime playwright who has had more than 30 of her plays produced. She\u2019s written a musical, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miracle in Memphis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published by Samuel French, and co-authored the screenplay of the 2006 feature film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raising Flagg<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Alan Arkin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She says her inspiration for her new play was the Eugene Shakespeare Club, which has been meeting and discussing the Bard since 1909.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performances are at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18; 2 pm Sunday, Feb. 19; and 7:30 pm Thursday-Saturday,\u00a0 Feb. 23-25; and 2 pm Sunday, Feb. 26. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets are $15 at TheVLT.com.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Springfield playwright Dorothy Velasco\u2019s latest play, Ladies Shakespeare Club, premieres Friday, Feb. 17, for a two-weekend run at Very Little Theatre\u2019s intimate Stage Left.
