When Black Lives Matter-related protests were at their peak during 2020, national media outlets looked to the White Bird Clinic program as an alternative to policing \u2014 ranging from spots on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/05\/us\/cahoots-replace-police-mental-health-trnd\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/12\/cahoots-program-may-reduce-likelihood-of-police-violence\/617477\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But now the program has received the patented comical news treatment by Comedy Central\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cc.com\/video\/37pnmf\/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-cahoots-is-reimagining-police-work-in-oregon\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Daily Show<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Trevor Noah on Jan. 25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugene Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes a little cameo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Show <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correspondents before him (such as Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and Samantha Bee), Roy Wood Jr. blends the show\u2019s trademark straight-faced news personality with comedic timing while interviewing CAHOOTS\u2019 Program Coordinator Ebony Morgan and former Operations Coordinator Tim Black.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan was voted by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EW<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> readers for the 2020 Best Of issue as Best Health care worker and CAHOOTS, aka Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets, won best nonprofit and service for the homeless. And during the interview, Morgan had the cover of that issue in the frame of her computer\u2019s camera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAHOOTS (aka Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets) has been around for 30 years \u2014 or as Wood puts it, \u201cThe Fresh Prince hadn\u2019t even left for Bel Air yet.\u201d Wood learns in the segment that CAHOOTS staff don\u2019t carry pepper spray, guns or even ninja stars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan then ran down a typical call and how CAHOOTS staff responds to people in crisis. She said staff have snacks, tents, clean clothes and more in the van.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou had me at snacks,\u201d Wood interjected. \u201cI\u2019m a 40-year old man, and I\u2019ll get in the van for some snacks.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood also talked to Morgan and Black about de-escalation tactics \u2014 or as he described it, \u201cjust being chill.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black said he needs to be engaged with the person and demonstrate that he cares about them \u201cto work through this crisis together.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Wood said that CAHOOTS has responded a lot to \u201cKarens,\u201d an online term for predominantly white women who often freak out about people of color being in public like grilling or walking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do encounter situations where folks call in because of racist motivations or because they have a bias against different socio-economic circumstances,\u201d Black said. \u201cIn those situations, I think there are two things we have to recognize: What it was that triggered that person to make that call?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd then two, slap the shit out of that person,\u201d Wood interrupted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black laughed, saying that\u2019s not a CAHOOTS strategy and instead they present an opportunity to confront the caller\u2019s white fragility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using city of Eugene budget figures, Wood shows how CAHOOTS and their vans filled with snacks, clean clothes and care save money. Comparing the Eugene police budget of $90 million, he says CAHOOTS costs taxpayers $2.1 million \u2014 but responds to nearly 20 percent of the calls. Returning to these budget numbers at the end of the segment, Wood posed the question we\u2019ve all asked in Eugene: If this is what they could do with $2 million, imagine what they could do with $90 million?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAHOOTS\u2019s most recognized year ever continues.
